Things I love to do - Travel, Paint, Dance and such

Imagine a dark night, standing in the middle of a forest, cold breeze making a compelling whisper and there is a sudden hoot heard from a distance…Ok, that was a lame attempt at painting a scary picture. My recent ‘camping in the wilderness’ experience was anything but scary :)

Humboldt Redwood State Park was the venue .

It was the first time camping, for us as well as for our camping mates (another couple, Pr the husband and Lx the wife.) But tips and pointers from a dozen experienced people did us good. Tents and tools, blankets and buckets, matchbox and masalas – we arrived all prepared..or so we thought.

First thing we did after setting up the tent was to get out the stove and make some hot masala chai.Just when all were patting own backs for a task accomplished, one asked ‘Where’s the strainer?”. Never would anyone realize the dire importance of a tea strainer until you are stuck without one on a cold evening in the middle of the jungle ..and with some smoking hot chai waiting to be filtered and sipped. Arrgh! Anyways, it took only a few minutes before we came up with an alternative – paper towel. It took patient minutes of slow and steady pouring, but it worked! Here is the proof :D

Me with Pb at a mission ;)

Me with Pr at a mission ;)

Later in the evening, a leisurely walk in the woods, hand in hand with H was rejuvenating…like untying some knots from the inner being and setting them free.

Stroll

It was darker and colder soon. The able men of the  21st century took more than 10 minutes to figure out the right way to set up a camp fire before we could finally sit and warm ourselves :D

An elaborate dinner prep ensued and though it took little more than an hour, our menu read like this -

Grilled corn on the cob with salt, pepper and lemon rubbed on

Grilled and fried potatoes with a good dash of salt and chili powder

Readymade Parathas and paneer palak reheated to perfection

Dahi/yogurt for the sides

Pickles of 3 variety

Cookies for desert

All of the above washed down along a glass of wine..that’s one awesome feeling right there!

After a while we retired for the night with a sleeping bag and a book into our tents  and called it a day..a fulfilling day :)

Retiring

Night was in fact the toughest part. Three layers of clothing, a fleece blanket under a thick insulation sleeping bag and still it felt cold!

In hardly 30 minutes, we heard Pr calling out for H . It was getting hard to breathe, he said. H tried to keep a calm outlook and asked him to try doing the inhale-exhale deeply. He came out of the tent,  tried exactly that and immediately felt better. The reason for the temporary breathing problem was because his body did not like the enclosed space he was lying in. Pr and H set out in the car looking for a motel to sleep…it was midnight. I lie in my tent, tightly closed eyes, pretending to have fallen asleep in that pitch darkness. Lx was also around, but no help at all. For the kind of condescendingly cold person she is, I am not sure if she was even worried for her husband. No kidding!

The boys returned in some time and complained there was no place to stay around the forest. Duh ?! Finally Pr and Lx moved out  and slept on the comfy reclining seats in the car .

Dawn broke and I woke up to the sounds of woodpeckers busy at work. The morning was a magnificent sight. How often do you open your eyes to something like this?

Morning lights

Those ultra maintained common shower rooms and rest rooms for campers was a blessing. I can live natural..but..err..not having to look for bushes or wide trees to do your daily job..hehe.

Kudos to the H’s planning, we spent the morning playing amidst those pleasant green surroundings. Collecting the Shuttle Cork and Frisbee back when they flew into broken twigs or thorny bushes did not seem like a big deal at all!

After a quick breakfast, we packed our swim suits and set out to a river nearby. While the day was sunny enough for the guys to open up chilled beer cans, the river water gave us shivers. So it was just wetting our feet and posing for some pics..and of course munching on the salt snacks we brought along.

Riverside

It was lunch time and we soon were back at our camp site lighting our stove. By then it was pretty obvious that Pr is a thoroughly helpful and friendly person while Lx is just the opposite. She just stood there carelessly watching us work, occasionally lifting a random object off the table and asking me ‘ where should I keep this?’. Super Annoying. I sure grumbled in my head ‘ Does this look like my private kitchen? Find your work and be a team member if you can, missy’.

The drive to the ‘Avenue of Giants’ through the forest roads was so amazing that we had to stop mid way to take it all in. I was acting like a crazy monkey-brand in the middle of the road..too happy to be there, I guess ;)

Crazy

The rest half of the day was spent trekking in that wilderness- one of the most gorgeous I have ever seen. The narrow mud path among the giant redwoods humbles you. Each one of those trees age back a thousand years…and every single tree releases more then 500 gallons of water into the air, in a single day! ( yeah, yeah..I read the facts).

Now, tell me, does this picture remind you of Jurassic park? I waited to spot a T-Rex too :P

JurassicPark

On the way back to the camp site, the boys made a spontaneous decision and turned the car towards one other popular spot nearby, the Trinidad beach. It was an hour long drive and though hungry and tired by then, we got out of the car for a view like this… and forgot everything else.

Trinidad Beach

Walking down the steps towards the beach, humming a silly song ..

Steps

I remember standing still near that rock and heartily thanking God – for making earth so beautiful and putting me in it to savor every bit.

Thoughts

Next day, bidding good bye was hard, but we knew we were not going back empty.

We had the greenest of memories and the most gratifying of moments to take back home with us….much more than asked for :)

Dance like nobody’s watching; love like you’ve never been hurt.
Sing like nobody’s listening; live like it’s heaven on earth.
—————————————————–

I love this quote and dancing too.
That is why I joined this dance group to perform in a show..after 4 long years spent away from stage.

All of ‘them’ dance so beautifully. I shake my hips along side those delightfully enthusiastic girls.

But, somehow, it does not feel like I belong.

Am I intimidated by their grace ?.. their ability to pick any step in a jiffy or the fact that I try too hard remembering my next step while the rest of them just flow with the music ?

Maybe..Or is it just because I am the only new one in the group and all the rest are buddies who have shared the stage in several performances over the years?

I dance my heart out every time and then say ‘ One more rehearsal please?’, while the rest of them sit around relaxing and chit-chatting.

More rehearsals = More time spent dancing together which will get me the sense of belonging..among this bunch of ‘well known’ strangers? Not sure.

I have hardly felt so detached to any group of ‘friends’ before.

I know, I know – There are greater things in the world to worry about.
The worsening global food crisis, the sky rocketing fuel prices, the heart wrenching natural disasters in China and Burma, recession in America or even that Tendulkar is not being able to make it to the IPL matches! I know.

That is exactly why I did not want to post this piece earlier.
But, what the heck !
I am affected by this little happening in my life as much as I am by the other events in the world. ( Of course their degrees are never comparable)

This dance show has many other groups and even professionals performing. The funds collected will be handed over to a well known charitable organization in India that supports orphaned children. I am proud to be a part of their noble effort. Plus, I am doing myself a favor by dusting off my dance shoes..after those blissfully energetic days spent dancing during college days.

I am doing pretty well, I suppose, In spite of that nagging inferiority complex when I am around ‘those’ girls.

Thankfully, nothing or nobody seem to matter me when the music starts.

Tomorrow is the big night.. and am gonna dance like nobody’s watching !

Yes :)

I am back home, sweet home.

Travel all over the world, experience unbelievable things, eat the most delicious food, spend wonderful days free of worries/responsibilities, do all that you like in any part of the earth ..but getting back home always feels great!
It did, to me.

Except for the initial hurdle at the airport, the Europe trip was fantastic! ( Man, Spending 8 hours from 4 in the morning , at the airport, waiting for your flight is no fun, especially if you had to cancel your tickets due to a stupid visa problems and buy new ones, on the spot, for 5 times the original price !! ).

Here is a brief report :

Paris

The most wonderful moment was when I lived the surprise arranged by the hubby : Dinner booked at a restaurant on top of the Eiffel tower !

That city indeed has romance in the air. What else do you say when you see couples kissing or holding tight at every 50 steps on the road?

The Monalisa disappointed me though. Believe me, her mystique smile and all that is hyped way too much. I am not sure whether Leonardo was too lazy or too busy with other paintings. Why did he take 7 years to paint this little thing?! I admired and Wowed at so may other paintings in the same museum, but not this one – sorry Monalisa fans !
Palace Gardens       Gorgeous view at night, Eiffel tower

SwitzerlandWhich is your favorite among the countries you have traveled, sometimes people ask. This one is the hands down winner !

Swiss is true to all that hype and more. Try and make it to this place atleast once in life, preferably in spring, and you will realize what is heaven on earth – seriously ! The green grounds sprinkled with all sorts of colorful flowers, the beauteous snow covered mountains at a distance, the superbly friendly people or the ‘accidental’ discoveries of little flowing streams or gushing waters – everything of Swiss is lovable. And, when I say all this, I mean the suburbs, not the cities.

The overwhelming moment came when we stepped on this peak called ‘Klien Matterhorn’. The clouds floating below us.. snow peaks trying hard to hold their heads higher and the sun smiling at all this silly game. Words fail me in describing how it felt there..A serene view , Switzerland     Floating clouds and the snow peaks in Zermatt, Switzerland

Austria

We spent just two days in Vienna, and wished we stayed some more.

The music Gods of the 18th century – Mozart and Strauss were born here. This place is musical all over. We went for a concert involving an orchestra, ballet and oprah performances and I could not stop smiling for the entire evening. Man,those people are TALENTED !

       Concert at Vienna

Italy
Venice was charming, in it’s own way. Not very clean, quite noisy and hot – but, I can hardly remember these negative aspects. All I can remember vividly when I think of Venice are the colorful houses and the carnival masks. Ah, and the waters ..and the Gondola ride :-) But, charging tourists 90 Euros for a 30 minute trip was a rip off ! I think those Gondola ‘drivers’ are millionaires already. They just wear simple striped shirts and appear ‘normal’ just to make more money, yeah!

The Gondola on waters   The gorgeous carnival masks, Venice

Rome cried out history from every brick. The colosseum spoke volumes and I was dizzy imagining 50,000 Romans cheering at the fight between the gladiator and the ferocious animal on the arena. A chill ran down my spine when the audio guide told ” The dead Gladiators were touched by a burning iron rod to avoid any chances of the Gladiator pretending dead”. Wow !

A grand view of the Colosseum, Rome    Vatican City on a rainy day

We returned back all safe and sound. Except for a sleepy head ( jet lag is bad..boohoo) and a pair of droopy red eyes, I am back to the grind at work and home. Lots of catching up to do with so many things… my favorite blogs included.

See ya around, people :)

Me flying to Europe next week, people !

Looooong time cherished dream coming true, finally!!

Yes, Yes, Yes - Trip to  Europe !!!

Here’s the route : Fly to Paris, France  – > Interlaken,Switzerland  -> Zermatt, Switzerland  – > Vienna, Austria – > Venice, Italy  -> Rome, Italy  -> Fly out back to home.

Inspite of the big load of work assignments to finish, long list of shopping to do and huge bulk of packing to complete..I am SUPER EXCITED :D

Hope to bring back a basket full of great experiences and interesting memories to share.

The travel, the people, the plans, the weather – Wish me luck , may all go well !

Each one out there deserves a “Me Time”.

You know what I mean – the time when you are with nobody else but yourself. No spouse, parents, siblings or friends – not even those whose presence comforts you normally.

This urge of being all alone yourself, doing the simple things you like and spending a quite evening – I get this urge every now and then.

So, why not just do it? Now, that’s the question I hate to answer.

Hubby does not believe in “Me Time” !

“It’s  Bull..*”, he says.

Maybe true with him..but hello, I am not you.

He still does not understand and hardly makes any effort to understand.
Okay, when I don’t get the  “Me Time” by direct means, I steal.
Last weekend, one of our common friends invited us over for a lunch and just a hang out. But, I was in a different mood. I asked him to go ahead without me.

“Why?? Why aren’t you coming?” ( total surprise )

“Yeah, I need some time myself. Moreover, we just spent so much time with them few days back”

“Is this about having spent time already?!”  ( Brings a ridicule on the face)

“Not really, I just..”

“You are coming.”

“No, I..I was thinking of getting out my canvas today. Have plans to paint”

“Oh..Hmmm.You sure?”

“…yes”

That was easy.

I spent a good amount of time reading, browsing, watching old albums, munching little goodies, humming my favorite songs..”

It was fun !

Then came a phone call from him :

” Hey, how is your painting coming along?”

“Uh..umm..good”

“I am starting in about 10 minutes and will be there before 7 “

“Okay”

Wow, that was close.

I hurried to get out my paint and canvas.Oh, how I love  it when in the right mood and mind set.Alas! this was not one of those times. This time, it was nothing more than a means of pretext..

Not a thing came up in the mind.So I started on a scene of sunrise..literally forcing myself to start at it!

He came back and saw me busy ( at least I looked like I was).

After an hour, I completed , not surprisingly, my worst work so far on the canvas. I hated it.

It was time for dinner and I went to him “Let’s have dinner”

“You are done with the painting?”

“Uh..yes.But, I tore it up”

“What?! Why?You spend all this time and effort and then tear it ? You could have spent that time with friends instead!”

“Hmm”

Well, I had a nice evening  ;-)

The new year started off with lot of dancing, games, talking ( read blabbering), meeting new faces ( interesting ones) and feeling ‘nice’ :-) The party rocked!..and lasted till 6 in the morning. ( I guess that is the most late I have been in a party, ever).

As for the new faces, I met this guy who was so enthusiastic on the dance floor, so so full of energy and zest..he amazed me.He amazed me more when I got to know from a friend that he has just sold his startup to a giant, over a multi million dollar deal.He hence just spends all his time having fun now.Retired with a monster check, at the age of 32.

Ah, beauty !

On second thoughts, I would be bored with life if I have achieved and earned enough so early. Its always about ‘looking forward’ for anew achievement..atleast for me.

And, yeah..perhaps the ‘grapes are sour’ too ;-)

On an other note, have been doing enough good, health wise – morning runs, healthy green choices to eat,biking..

Baby, do I feel fit or what?!

Got back to painting after a gap of over 2 years..and pleased to know that am still not out of touch. Its that feeling of self contained harmony with yourself, for those few hours with the paint and the canvas.Time doesn’t seem to matter, neither does hunger.

Have never been able to control hunger anytime otherwise. People – Cranky girl gets crankier when her tummy is growling.Beware.

I surely wish this ‘nice’ feeling remains and lingers to continue. .

Oh, yes.
